Dieser Distrikt dehnt sich ueber eine Flaeche von 2126 qkm aus und hat eine bewegte Geschichte.Die Historiker sagen, dass es hier schon 1000v.C. eine hochzivilisierte Bevoelkerung gab.In den Huegeln Wayanads wurde viel aus der Neuen Steinzeit gefunden und die beiden Hoehlen von Ampukuthimala, zwischen Sultan Bathery und Ambalavayal gelegen, die Wandmalereien und Symbole zeigen, sprechen Baende ueber die vergangenen Zeiten und Zivilisationsformen.
